In the beginning of the series Anzu falls in love with a mysterious, darker version of Yuugi which promptly becomes known as ‘the other Yuugi’. It’s easy to see why at least, he did save her from a thug (or two) quite a few times. He’s confident and cocky and doesn’t take shit from anyone. Above all he’s a fierce protector. It seems like the perfect equation at least for Anzu.

This is conflicting, however, because she knows that there’s the normal Yuugi. Someone who is a long time friend. Someone that she knows has a crush on her. Anzu isn’t blind. There’s no way she could misconstrue his true feelings and bumbling around whenever she’s there. She’s not a dumb woman.

So here lies the problem. As long as Yuugi and the other Yuugi are together, how could she really act on her desires? The fact of the matter is, no matter how hard she’s crushing, she wouldn’t do such a thing. She’d never betray Yuugi like that, probably not even if she had his permission. Luckily for her, the spirit solves this dilemma for her.

He has no interest. It must have been tough to go on a pseudo-date with him and realize that he had absolutely no interest in her whatsoever. He barely can even make eyecontact with her or pretend he’s interested in whatever she’s going on about. It really must have smarted but that was the truth. He was too goal oriented to worry about what she wanted. But there’s something else here.

He might not be as smart as Anzu but he knows Yuugi has a crush on her. While Yuugi is preparing for the date even he tries to spur the other on into action, to get him to tell Anzu how he really feels. He knows his partner likes Anzu, so he’d never in a million years betray that kind of trust and knowledge by going after her.

So here Anzu is, realizing she has no chance both by her own means and because the spirit seems not to be interested. She’s left to the wayside and the spirit has no qualms with this. It’s neither of their places to act and he seems more than content to let her twist in the wind than to say anything about it. Could he have said “hey you know Yuugi likes you”? Sure. But it wasn’t in the plans.

This is simply a pretty unworkable pairing, at least in my opinion. In the end, she watches Yuugi come into his own and even remarks how much stronger he’s gotten. Even once when Yuugi said he would switch with the spirit just so she could talk to him (because he realized Anzu liked him) she told him no don’t do that. They both come into their own over the course of the series, they both become better, stronger people. In the end their getting together is inevitable, I think- and it was something Atem probably would have been happy to witness.

Well, it’s nice to always hear what non-revolutionshippers have to say.

It’s a realistic look at the couple. I really enjoyed reading this. This agrees with most of my headcanon for Anzu and why she never said anything to Yami before.

Thank you for putting this up, Emmy. It was nice and insightful.
